Update on Ovi Store opening
Published by Eric on May 26th, 2009 in Ovi by Nokia and Store
Hi all,
Shortly after launching the Ovi Store at 2 am ET, we began experiencing extraordinarily high spikes of traffic that resulted in some performance issues for users accessing store.ovi.com and store.ovi.mobi. We immediately began to address this issue by adding servers, which resulted in intermittent performance improvements. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused Ovi Store users and encourage you to continue giving us feedback as we develop the service further.
The Ovi Store device client, however, has continued to perform very well and there were no reported issues from users logged on through that entry point.
We’ll keep you posted,
Eric

I had the same problem with logging into OviStore to download apps with my Nokia E63. I kept getting the invalid login errors. Solutions are in two parts:
1) when you are logging in with email address, make sure there are NO spaces at the end – they get appended with three full stops which stuffs things up. Delete them before you move to the password field.
2)when you enter your password, stay in the same field space box and press the centre/select button on your mobile – don’t try to navigate to the other button to enter.
Hope that helps/works for you.

ovi is now working on my side… thanks
March 21, 2010 at 6:42 am
Ovi is Nokia’s reactive response to the Apple Store, which does not work with Nokia’s diverse phone OSes and systems. If they want to do it right, they’ll have to mark a point in the sand and say “HERE is where we standardize, and have a uniform phone OS”. Otherwise it’s a hotchpotch effort which simply will not work.

Major problem! I’ve been waiting and waiting for a facebook application for my Nokia E71, and now thats its arrived my phone won’t let me have it because I can’t log into Ovi through my mobile!
I can log into Ovi fine with my laptop but whenever i try on my phone it says ‘invalid sign-in information’, it does the same for Skype as well. I can sign in to Ovi on my phone from the first stage but it won’t let me sign in to download an application or theme or anything! Very frustrating.
Can anyone help?

[...] V dlho pripravovanom portáli s aplikáciami a mobilným obsahom Ovi Store mala Nokia vložených mnoho nádejí. Už krátko po spustení masívny záujem surferov premenil tento sviatok na katastrofu. Operatívne navýšenie serverovej kapacity dlho nepomáhalo a stránka chvíľami nebola funkčná ani dnes. Problémy na Ovi blogu priznala aj Nokia. [...]

Give it up guys – look at google – they are launching wave next and for sure its gonna have a mobile version also – and here at nokia we are still struggling to deal with web traffic issues? For God’s sake, if you do something – do it well.

Hi,
Still OVI store is not working on phone or on web in Middle East, Qatar to be specific. Any reason for delayed launch?
May 30, 2009 at 12:01 am
Am still getting the error “Sorry, you cannot sign in at this time. Try again later.” on my 5800
What a fckn mess
May 28, 2009 at 10:54 pm
I have two “pending” charges on my credit card for purchases at the Ovi store. Never did get the product. Yay, Ovi store.
May 28, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Thanks for all the work and feedback!
Initial hickups are frustrating but forgettable. With such a broad userbase the future looks bright for Ovi.
We already port a number of our apps and have customers pinging us about doing the same.
May 28, 2009 at 2:38 pm
I tried downloading a ringtone from the Ovi store and it did not recognize my username and password. The issue as not been fixed even though I tried setting up a new account.
This was a horrible user experience. I am a nokia guy but this will probably drive me to the iphone.
May 28, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Hi,
- Implement websso for easy end user access (and utilize that for substores also….)
- have web links to ovi from http://www.nokia.com
- http://www.nokia.com stands for brand recognition and user is more willing to register
because there is “more trust”
- searching and categorization inside ovi is poor. It needs to be easier to find
content inside the pages. Make a search engine for finding content. EX there will be big number of maps available
- pricing startegy needs to be alligned to BIG volumes. Sell milions of units with low price……
(utilize price volume elasticity correctly). 20 eur unit price is a crazy for electronic content.
- aim high enough to have right scales for business cases. Volume counts.
- implement purchase log for users
Thanks and greetings from NSN

Thanks everyone for your posts and for taking the time to share your honest feedback on your experiences with Ovi Store! Below are specific responses to many of these. Know that we are capturing and passing along your input to our engineering and product teams so please keep these coming! We look forward to working with you to evolve the Ovi Store service! – Eric
Clinton Jeff May 26, 2009 at 5:03 pm > Any word on the Ovi Store launch in the Middle East? >>@Jeff, Ovi Store is available via the XHTML experience store.ovi.com to most users in the Middle East. The only countries we are not able to support—due to embargo reasons are: Iran, Syria, and Sudan
3 Vaibhav Sharma May 26, 2009 at 5:10 pm I’m still not seeing the client here in India.
>>@Sharma, n India, assuming you have a data plan that supports mobile web browsing, you can access the XHTML version of Ovi Store at store.ovi.com using your Nokia mobile browser.
4 Arne May 26, 2009 at 5:18 pm I don’t even get the OVI client offered via Download!,
>>@Arne, Try the xhtml site first. Go to store.ovi.com from your Nokia Browser. If you device and country are supported by the OviStore client you will see a link / prompt to download the client
5 Christian May 26, 2009 at 5:39 pm Choose the kind of connection when launching ovi store app on my Nokia 5800? have free Wifi available, but even without asking Ovi Store will choose my costly gsm/3g-connection. >>@Christina; Regarding using your WiFi while you use store – Go to your 5800 XM menu > settings > Connectivity > Wireless LAN scanning (set to on)
6 shavelchek May 26, 2009 at 5:50 pm- George why is the user experience so clunky, slow and poor?. Where the hell is the Facebook app for Nokia? >> @shavelchek Thanks for your feedback. We’ve been increasing Ovi Store server capacity and making system optimizations which should help with the speed. The UI will continue to evolve. Let us know your specific thoughts and we will bring them back to R&D. The Facebook Series 40 Widget is available. The S60 Facebook widget is under development. We’ll keep you posted when that becomes available
7 Adrian May 26, 2009 at 5:56 pm Same boat as Arne, there was a link on the mobile ovi store website to download the mobile client, said that the item had been removed.
>> @Adrian, we’ll be adding the supported device list to store.ovi .com shortly. In the meantime, try the XHTML site from your Nokia browser at store.ovi.com
8 Anonymous May 26, 2009 at 6:44 pm Wow… so Nokia did no performance tests?
>> @Anonymous Thanks for your note. We’ve done a number of optimizations since yesterday. The experience should be a lot faster now. Let us know if you’re still having problems.
9 David Greenberg May 26, 2009 at 7:05 pm Why is Nokia ignoring developer emails regarding issues with OVI? >>@ David Greenberg Our publisher team is looking into this and will get back to you shortly
10 Kypeli May 26, 2009 at 8:08 pm I have the same issue on my Nokia 5800! Hope Nokia fixes this very soon. Annoying and not very good user experience if I am not even to able to access the store on my mobile (in Finland). >> @Kypeli WiFi (we also use it to download the bigger files) Go to: Menu > settings > Connectivity > Wireless LAN scanning (set to on!)
11 Kypeli May 26, 2009 at 8:14 pm add a feature for the store.ovi.com (and client) to remember my login. >>@Kypeli, Thanks for this feedback regarding login. The Desktop and Client versions of Ovi Store do remember your logins after your register. The XHTML experience does require you to enter your password. We’re continuing to optimize these experiences to balance ease of use with security. Stay tuned for future updates on this.
13 varun May 26, 2009 at 9:07 pm Could you also explain what’s going on with the applications being pulled? For example, Twittix, >> @Varun – From time to time the portfolio of applications will change depending on our content management system. If a content item is removed we work with the publisher to address any outstanding issue and to republish as soon as possible. We expect the Twittex app will be back up shortly!
16 albanach May 26, 2009 at 9:56 pm Your signup page rejects email addresses with a + sign in the local part of the address >> @albanach – thanks for raising this email string issue. It’s being looked at by our product team.
18 Alex May 27, 2009 at 1:46 am location: Italy – phone: N78 – client: available – content: not available – web page: no content for N78 When Ovi Store starts for N78?
>> @Alex You should be seeing content on your N78. Try opening the client again and let us know if you’re still having problems.
24 Chris Stobbs May 27, 2009 at 11:34 am Why can you not sort on the main website? it’s basic flaw I think?!?! >>@Chris Stobbs, We offer a number of different sorts and filters on desktop experience (Most Popular, Newest / oldest, Paid, Free, List view with descriptions and Logo/Title view as well as language filter: (English, Spanish, Italian, German and Russian) and ..Keyword search Let us know what you’d like to see and we’ll look into it
25 Gazz May 27, 2009 at 11:57 am any chance there will be facebook widget? because i’ve been waiting to get this app >> @Gazz: — The Series 40 Facebook Widget is available now and appears in the catalogue if your selected device is a Series 40. The S60 Facebook Widget is under development (we’ll keep everyone posted when available)

You guys are just incapable lets face it.
It is NOT rocket size to build a scalable store these days. Use cloud computing Amazon, go grid whatever and you can add servers within minutes. Use CDM network backups for the most demanding content and you are done.
A company like Nokia to blow it like that.. with those excuses you guys should all be fired.. or the bosses. At least someone in your company should have a freaking clue how to build a somewhat scalable platform… if you can’t even get that done, how do you wanna transition to an application company.
Seriously guys its not even excusable, but honestly that’s about what I have seen from Nokia recently. Looking at the stuff you develop in your labs shows how completely out of touch you are… a barcode/dvd cover scanning app, has been on android and iphone for months while the dudes in your lab think its the most cool thing they will be rolling out. When I showed them the app on my android they were blown away….
Seriously guys, time to wake up.. or at least hire some people that are cutting edge… then as things stand now you guys won’t survive the next mobile generation…

Why is Nokia ignoring developer emails regarding issues with OVI?
In particular why is Nokia ignoring my request for a refund of the registration fee due to the misleading and inaccurate publicity material Nokia produced which did not make it clear the considerable problems and barriers that small developers, like myself, would have publishing to the OVI store.
May 26, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Wow… so Nokia did no perfomance tests and/or did not anticipate that a lot of people will try it out and thus produce a high load ?

I’m in the same boat as Arne, though there was a link on the mobile ovi store website to download the mobile client even if it always said that the item had been removed. Though I’m guessing Romania will be getting it a bit later, what reason would Nokia have to launch it here immediately? It’s not like they just built a factory here or anything like that:P

George why is the user experience so clunky, slow and poor? The only difference between Ovi Store and Download is a few tabs and gradient graphics?
