Like many of us at Nokia, I lead a double life. I’m a Thinkpad guy by day and a MacBook guy by night.
So you ask, how do you, Mister Ovi Files product manager, update that Word document you were working on until 2 am? You know, the one you forgot to copy to your USB stick? You obviously can’t use Ovi Files since it doesn’t support the Mac …
Yes, it does! I’m happy to announce that we’ve recently released our Ovi Files Macintosh Connector that lets you do everything you can do with our Ovi Files PC Connector:
- Remotely access the files stored on your OS X 10.5 (Leopard) based Mac from your mobile phone or web browser
- Send files to your friends, even if they don’t use Ovi
- Create an on-line mirror of content stored on your Mac using our Anytime Files feature

And you can use Ovi Files to access multiple computers at once.
Who said PCs and Macs can’t get along? Suits, hipsters, style mavens – - we can all groove with Ovi Files!
Sign up for FREE at https://files.ovi.com
P.S.: You don’t even need a Nokia phone to use Ovi Files on your Macintosh. But you might want to think differently and get the brand new Nokia N97. It’s awesome!

Great to see the notice going out, I’ve installed it and it works quite well. Not to throw out a nice challenge, but can we expect a Linux File Connector. I am itching to jump to linux.
I’ve been using it since files went free, and yes, it works like a charm! Surprised me actually, considering mobile phone companies’ record in supporting OS X with apps that aren’t just poorly ported windows versions.
This + Nokia Multimedia Transfer changed my opinions. (of course there’s the maps.ovi.com supporting Safari but the Maps v3.0 upgrader only being for windows fiasco.)
Hey, just stumbled across this blog.
Two feature requests that would improve my experience with Ovi:
1. That when I create a multi day event in the calendar on Ovi it shows it the event on each day in the calendar, not just the day the event starts.
2. Ovi integration with iCal and Address book, some kind of LDAP CALDav goodness should fix that.
I’m a tad confused. Is this indeed brand new, or has it been out for a bit? I /seem/ to have had the same functionality since I installed this when Files went free, but it’s not totally clear which version is which.
BTW, it also wasn’t clear what Files actually did previously. I only installed it because it was free, and I had an hour to kill. It’s quite clever and works very well, so tell the marketing guys to support these neat products better!
The link for the Mac connector in the userguide (https://support.files.ovi.com/support/content/userguide.php?id=10131&category_id=12) is misspelled so that the file is not found.
It reads
https://downloads.files.ovi.com/clients/OviFilesMacConnetor.dmg
and is missing a ‘c’ in the ‘Connector’ part of the filename. Manually adding the missing ‘c’ lets you download the file.
Please fix the link
I want Linux support for Ovi Files, Ovi Maps and Ovi in general. Now. I’m like completely fed up with the current situation. Come on Nokia, get our act together.
@Jake,
Want to really change your mind. Try syncing your N97 with your Mac. Ain’t gonna happen. It appears that Nokia hosed up the databases inside the firmware and 3rd party developers cannot create an iSync Plugin. My N97 is going back to Nokia on Saturday. Last time I spring for a high-end Nokia. Way to drive off customers Nokia.
By the way, this connector has been out a while. It is not new.
So how many log-ins does one need to use the various Nokia sites these days?
I left last year due to this never ending confusion
@Mads – Thanks for the tip and apologies if you had a problem downloading the connector as a result of it. We have corrected the page in question. You can also download the connector by logging into your Ovi Files account and selecting the “Add new computer” link below “My computers”.
@Stephen – Our decision to provide an Ovi Files Macintosh connector was based on an observed rise in Macintosh traffic to our sites and the Internet as a whole. We hope that a similar, measured rise in Linux usage will support the possibility of a Linux connector. This is a bit of a chicken-and-egg scenario, but given the rise in Linux on smaller laptops, universities and the like, I’m hopeful.
@Steven – Thank you for your feedback. We made the Ovi Files Macintosh Connector available for download exactly one month ago – a “soft launch”. Our goal with this blog post was to highlight this “recently released” connector for those who may not frequently use or already use Files. I’m glad that you’re enjoying using it!
@Fernando – I’ll pass on your good wishes to our Ovi Files engineering team. Many of them use Macs and worked hard to provide a good experience.
@Will – A single Nokia Account will enable you to login to Ovi Files, Mail, Maps, Share, etc. Non-Ovi services from Nokia, such as Sports Tracker and My Nokia also use Nokia Account. You can sign-up for a Nokia Account here: http://account.nokia.com/
@Tam – The problem is that it doesn’t keep the login in session. I go to ovi.com and login. Open a new tab and go to files.ovi.com and you’ll have to login again. That is total nonsense and very irritating as it happens with every single Nokia Site.
At least this is the experience with Opera 10 on Ubuntu. It of course is a whole another story when the whole page (maps.ovi.com for an example) is saying that my OS & browser isn’t supported. And then by changing the user-agent the whole site works just fine. There are no any sensible reasoning behind things like that. Follow the standards and you make it so much easier for all (including yourself).
And yes, I’d like to point out too that Nokia already has Maemo, you guys have Qt. If you’re really serious about services and integration and Linux, you should provide us the way to use these services.
Ok, didn’t mean to rant but the whole situation is a bit irritating. You really need to show that you do care for open source and that you really have a vision where systems just work together.
Is there anything such as Nokia messengers? Something that would resemble Blackberry messenger? Also, can I access MSN messenger from my Nokia phone? I seem to have trouble getting to the IM application in my 5800 XpressMusic.. “access point must be defined in server settings first”.. not sure what I’m supposed to do :-S
When will the Ovi Suite for Mac be available? This was first discussed by Nokia last October – nearly a year ago… and nothing – not even a beta version – has emerged. Is this still in development? If so, when will we see it?
Thanks.
Very high security risk if someone get your password. Then he/she can do anything to your Mac. Better idea would be similar system than dropbox is.
@EricP – The Opera 10 browser, as you know, is still in beta. You may want to upgrade to the latest Opera 10 beta and disable the “turbo” mode – per some information in the thread below. It may help resolve the problem you are experiencing:
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=275655
I have not been able to reproduce the issue you have encountered in the production Opera 9 release. Similarly, the issue does not present itself on popular releases of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. These browsers represent 90 – 95% of traffic on the Internet as a whole.
Obviously, there are a number of variables here (i.e. which build of the Opera 10 beta you are using, your Opera/Firefox/etc. configuration preferences, and so on). This blog isn’t the best forum for resolving the issue. What I can say is that we can re-examine the issue more thoroughly when Opera 10 reaches commercial quality.
@Sara – The Ovi Store (http://store.ovi.com) contains applications you can use with your 5800 phone, including those that provide instant messaging capabilities.
@Pilbo – Files SSL encrypts connections between your browser, your remote computers and our servers. It’s unlikely that your password would be “sniffed” and decrypted by hird-party. However, it’s important that each of us maintain security around our personal credentials: technology can’t stop a piece of paper with our bank account login information (written on it) from being stolen.
Can you further describe what your concerns are when you say “Then he/she can do anything to your Mac.”? What is the “anything” that worries you? What features in Dropbox best meet your personal needs?
@PJWSTL – Your E71x might be accessing the non-mobile version of the Ovi Files website. We’ll look into it. For now, can you try accessing this direct Ovi Files Mobile Website URL from your phone? https://files.ovi.com/sas?UIView=small_html
Hi,
I want Know that Linux support for Ovi Files, Ovi Maps and Ovi in general.
Now. I’m like completely fed up with the current situation.
Come on Nokia, get our act together.

Thanks Tam
Here’s an interesting article I’d like to share mentioning instant messengers, from [http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/12/microsoft-nokia-alliance-an-assault-on-blackberry/?em]
“The first Microsoft Office product to be on Nokia smartphones, which run the Symbian operating system, will be its Mobile Communicator, which allows business users to find and then communicate with colleagues by instant messages. That offering will come next year on one of Nokia’s E-series phones for business customers.”
good morning!!
i tried ovi files to work on my E71 2 months ago and I was advised that this application works only on E75. How true?? If it’s not true, then how can I be able to have it work? I’m rxcited now that I learned from you guys that it’s working semlessly with Mac.
thanks!!
@cristina – You can access the Ovi Files website from your mobile phone browser. Just type in the address – https://files.ovi.com. When you access the Ovi Files website from your mobile phone, we’ll show a specially formatted mobile version of it. You’ll be able to do just about everything from this specially formatted mobile website that you would from the application you mentioned.
Cool site, love the info.
Can I setup multiple calendars and sync them to my e71 and my wife’s e63? We now use google calendar, and I can sync multiple calendars using goosync premium (fee-based), but my wife can’t with the basic goosync (free). I’m desparately trying to find a simple way to sync email, calendar, contacts for my wife and her ThinkPad, and me and my MacBook. It’s a jungle out here….thanks
Why the disconnect between this and Share on Ovi? Why can’t Anytime files be transferred to one of my Albums? Let’s say I’m using Share as a Podcast server, and I’m away from home but I want to upload an episode from my home machine. Why can’t I select the audio file and have an option to copy to “my media”?
@Ern – Thanks for the feedback. We’re always looking at ways to improve the overall Ovi experience. Better wayw to access and re-use your content across Ovi is something we’ve identified as part of our “to-do’s”.
I just cannot register my Mac onto the service. I did install the ovi connector, tried the service but didn’t work, so I took my mac out of the service. Now that I want to try to reinstall the connector says it’s already registered, but it doesn’t show up on Files on Ovi. I’ve tried to uninstall the connector several times, but it always says it’s already registered, but without being able to connect. I’ve tried to contact support, but they don’t know what to say
It’s been nearly a year. I want my N97 (and N900) iSync and Mac Ovi Desktop.
What’s going on?
–mco
Jake, I had the same problem with my bleeding-edge Nokia N97. Recently I discovered a service called Syncfony (www.syncfony.com) – they’re solely focused on the Mac to Nokia syncing problem.
I too would love more Linux support from Nokia.
How would we go about voicing our opinions and letting Nokia know that Linux is growing in popularity and the users would love more Nokia support?
nokia would have been so much better off supporting linux users. Mac users just go by an iphone. You BM is just all wrong. Open your code base and allow people to do the work for you. I would like to see many connectivity apps from nokia to support linux instead of apple. You guys are just shooting yourself on the leg.
CRAP! I for one will be sticking to the original Nokia PC suite. Nokia should really tell their customers what new products will and will not do. I do not want to play games or any of the other silly things people apparently do with their mobile phoines. To me and thousands of other business people a mobile phone is a business tooland boy does Ovi fall far short of being a patch on the original PV suite. So my verdict – It is CRAP so it is back to the drawing board if Nokia wantsd to keep business customers.
What about WebDAV access to Ovi Files?
It is somewhat ironic that from S60 3rd ed FP2 Nokia provides a WebDAV client (named Remote Drives) and we are able to use it with Apple iDisk but not with Nokia’s own Ovi Files…
Ovi files for linux would be excellent!!!!!!
As quoted by Stephen, Eric P, Naresh Sharma, James, leonidas, Robertoh89, am looking for Linux support guys and lads!
Tam Huynh pointed out the chicken-and-egg scenario: Linux support will rise the Linux traffic on your site : e.g. I haven’t connected more than twice a year on OVI since I’ve seen nowhere announcement that OVI now support Linux. See the point ?
Fortunately replacements tools getting ready
Cheers,
