Hi- my name is Martin Ramsin– I’m in our Social Location team and am the product manager for the Ovi SDK, which we announced today at Nokia World in Stuttgart.
Ovi SDK is a developer toolkit we’ve been working on for the past year that exposes JavaScript APIs to Ovi Services on mobile. The Ovi SDK, available right now in beta, enables you to create contextual apps for Nokia devices, we call them Ovi apps.
The first APIs that are available are for mapping and navigation. The Ovi Maps player API for web has been in beta for a few months and now we bring those to mobile. High level JavaScript APIs to vector based 3D maps, satellite pictures and a whole lot more. Map data is based on Navteq maps with best in class data and global coverage. And best of all, for you we make it both open and free. The Ovi Navigation player API introduces turn by turn navigation and routing APIs for pedestrian and car navigation. Again, for you, free.
We call these Ovi APIs “players” because they are like media players: easy to embed in your web site, and now easy to use in your mobile app. With one line of code, your app can enable car navigation or pedestrian navigation to the destination.
The Ovi SDK is based on web technologies. With basic knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, You can create Ovi apps for mobile and embed the Maps player in your web site. We have even gone one step further in the SDK by including a UI library for mobile devices that automatically scale to different device form factors.
The SDK itself is runs as a plugin in your Firefox (on PC) and Safari (on Mac) browser.
Ovi apps are contextual. What does that mean? It means that the apps put the user in the center. Literally. By using positioning APIs and time, the app can filter out information that is relevant for the user “right here, right now” without the need for even a search query.
The map is great for visually display large amount of data on small screens. With navigation, the Ovi Apps can bridge the virtual and real world by guiding the users to a location he or she has discovered.
Ovi SDK is launched today as a developer preview (i.e. in an early beta) to get your feedback. Go to http://www.forum.nokia.com/ovi, apply for the beta program, join the conversation in the discussion boards and let us know what you think!
Cheers from all of us on the team– we’re excted to see the amazing things that we know you will make!
Martin

I like to hear about updates. I cannot say that NavTeq Maps are the best in class. In parts of the world they are grotesquely false, and when pointing this out, I did not hear any reply.
I also wish that fundamental problems (such as the impossibility of SMSing your position) would be ironed out sooner rather than later. And I wish Nokia would listen to such problems, instead of bringing out the next toy that is half-baked.
Sorry to be so negative, but these are substantial problems.
Hi, I had purchased a 5800 Nokia phone a few months ago. I have also signed up an account with OVI. But I keep receiving the same error message when I sign-in OVI, i.e. password authenication system not available. As a result, I am not able to purchase any application or games from OVI which is quite frustrating.
I hope the relevant department can look into this matter. Thanks
please please introduce more apps in the ovi store just like in the app store of iphone
How come you guys think and prepare such a big portal for applications … and you do not have even one single application for your biggest Nokia E 90 mobile ???
how do you guys justify this?
I wonder what is the proper channel to give feedback on ovi store experience?
For lack of better place, I’ll vent here:
Browsing from a PC, when I go to http://store.ovi.com/ and don’t log in, the select device is N97.
It shows:
“Displaying content for Nokia N97″
Suggested for me. Show all
Change the “Show all” to “Paid” and you have 0 items! What kind of suggestion is that?
In fact the category is irrelevant, change “Suggested to me” to “Newest to Oldest” or anything else, for all of them “Paid” show 0 items.
The search functionality does not seem to find anything, neither on device, nor through Firefox. If I enter the search term ‘dictionary’, Show all, it will display me a bunch of themes and free apps that don’t have anything to do with a dictionary. But if I go through the apps one by one there are plenty of dictionaries. Even searching by the app name does not work.
How can it be so bad after months on-line?
Hallo, Martin Ramsin,
can the developers name a set of games for nokia’s like racing live, imobster and world war. i ask this coz these are the most addictive games i have ever played on a phone and i already know millions of people play them on the iphone and ipods.

Tell me about it. The exact same thing is giving me a headache.
This is really a killer feature, especially if it’s really as easily implemented as it seems. I’m looking forward for more applications as the new DB Navigator that take advantage of this mechanism.
hmm
hello I have a question with this of the Ovi sdk it will be possible to integrate applications you toss in Symbian with the navigator ovimap of the mobil, enconcreto has an application where I keep clients’ data among these data I have latitude and longitude and my question is it will be possible to trace a route from my current position until the client’s position calling to ovi maps from my application symbian
Why isn’t there a FaceBook App for the Nokia E71?
Or does anyone know where I can get one?
For me with introduction of OVI Store was only one change: I stopped buying games and other app. for my phone. I used to do in through Catalog application in my E50 phone. Next time I wanted to buy something else, I have been offered to upgrade to OVI store, which I did and now it’s empty – “sorry, your phone is not supported”
this is the way Nokia via OVI store trying to push users change their phones?
Smart, very smart
But frankly, hate that approach.
Hi I am new user of OVI SDK
1 – I would like to know if it’s possible to customize the navigation route from a point A to a point B i.e chosse myself (by programming) which roads take or not when navigating ?
2 – Are there somewhere i can find a simple navigation code example ?
Best regards,
