Redownload for Store: Easier to Restore Lost Content to Your Nokia Device

I’m pleased to share the news that we’ve made redownloading of premium content available for Store users. Redownloading is as simple as it sounds – it lets Ovi Store users, who previously purchased and downloaded content to their device, to redownload, recover, and restore the content in the event that something happens to it. Think of it as content insurance.

Every day, millions of users from more than 180 countries, using a wide range of Nokia devices have discovered, purchased, and downloaded cool new apps and games, like Shazam, Gravity, and Pac-Man (my personal favorite) from the Store. They use these apps and games to enhance their lives—to discover new music, to stay in touch with their friends and followers, or to simply entertain themselves and pass the time by playing a classic arcade game. However, as with any digital content, there is the risk of loss or breakage. Was the file downloaded properly? Did you lose your network connection while downloading? Was the content accidentally deleted? Did a software update render the content incompatible? Did you reset your device? All of these events can occur, and can make it challenging for you to enjoy the wide range of apps, games, ringtones, podcasts, and video clips from Ovi Store.

With this latest Store release, we’ve added a simple way for you to restore content that you purchased and downloaded through Store to your device. We take very seriously the fulfillment of content that is acquired through the Store, and while we can’t prevent certain events that may cause damage or the loss of content, we can make it easier for you to re-acquire it. Please watch this short tutorial below to learn more about how to redownload previously purchased content.

As the tutorial explains, if you use the Store through our mobile client application, you’ll be required to upgrade to the newest version on S60 devices—look for version 1.5(387) or higher—and on Series 40 devices—look for version 1.6.1 or higher—to take advantage of redownloading. The latest version of Ovi store for S60 devices is rolling out now while the Series 40 version will begin rolling out at the end of this week. If you receive a prompt to update your client, please accept it!

If you shop the Store through our mobile web site at store.ovi.com on your Nokia mobile browser, the feature is enabled today.

And regardless of how you shop the Store, we will honor purchases made before this new version, so if you purchased the BlockGO game in August and it didn’t download properly, give it another shot by visiting the My Stuff section of the store.

We hope content redownloading will improve the way you use and enjoy content acquired through the Store by providing a simple, easy, and no-hassle way to make you and your content whole again.

- Michael

PS: We also updated our search experience, making it easier to access what you’re looking for across our entire content catalog. We highly value your feedback, so let us know what you think.

Still no possibility for transferring the purchased apps to a new device. Not good.

Thanks for this. I bought best profiles when the store was newly launched. I lost the app when i reformatted my phone. When i found out that redownloading was not possible i had been holding off on purchasing new apps from the store.

This new feature will mean that I can start buying the apps from the store again.

    finally !

The search seems to work much better now, I just tried from PC.
Also the restoration feature is very welcome.

One improvement suggestion to content submission process: I uploaded an application for the QA. 12 days later it got rejected on formality–I had forgotten to set one device fully tested on 3rdEd fp2 platform. That kind of thing could be easily automatically detected, now it took 12 days. Having fixed this I presume I’m back at the end of the queue.

I read somewhere that the Store is approving 500 content items a week, but it did not say how many there are in the queue. Is that available somewhere? It would be nice to have some kind of estimated time for the QA process.

    Keep up the good progress.

I’m not being prompted to upgrade by the client on my E71. Is there a way to manually force an upgrade or download a more recent client?

In many devices, you can go to the Download! application and find the latest version there

Hey, I’m interested in giving Ovi suite a shot. Is it still as bloated and laggy as Nokia Suite? And does it mess around with your o/s? A ver of the Nokia PC Suite broke most of my file extensions and messed with my other o/s settings so this is quite important to me.

Just to fulfill everyone’s curiosity: I did manage to fix most of the damage but it required a lot of effort and time. =P

thanks: like many other users I really think you are doing the right thing if you consolidate the quality of what you do, before you start new things. Can I give you one example? The SMS program in my old Nokia phone was better than the one in the N95 8GB, which is a disappointment.

When I tap on my ovi store to download apps I get the message “Script alert Application initialisation failed” I can not access or download apps to my phone by any means of ovi store at all.Can you please help

    service is really bad.
    nothing to do with AppleStore.
with Ovi you can only buy and download a time after which you must redeem.
dare I say it is a scam

    Finally…

The only problem now is to get the client to work, the Ovi Store App for my Nokia 5800 stoped working, there is no way to fix it, there is a message “Application Initialisation Failed” and that is it, I uninstall it, re intall it, and still doesn’t work. Please fix that bug. The only way to fix it is to hard reset.

    Hi,
I just purchased an E63, a huge change for me who has owned only Sony Ericsons over the past 10 years. I’m wondering if I’ve made a mistake . . . ? The software is slow to respond, the messaging services and browser sometimes freeze for up to 60sec+ and the phone has already rebooted itself twice. OVI store script error and other problems such as “no gateway reply” plague me already and I’ve only had the phone for three days! I really need this phone functioning the way it should and so I’ve checked for firmware/software updates but nothing is available. Frustration and despair really set in when downloads(the correct ones for my model) have cost me money and then they don’t work.
    I think I’m going to have “buyer’s remorse” . . . :)

I have a Nokia E75, when I downloaded the Maps updater it worked ok until I tried to download map updates, it deletes “Outdated Data” then goes to about 34mb of 107mb of the update and starts giving me error messages. At one stage I even got “Could not recover IMEI no” etc etc. After this it downloads v3 but does not install, only going up to 0.62mb of 5mb then giving me an error message. All this takes data and data costs money as I use my home PC. I have been a complete Nokia fan since they introduced the 2100 in 1995/6 and one of the big reasons I purchased this particular model was for the maps. I must admit I am very disappointed in this model as well as the poor back up and service from Nokia and OVI alike. It is not what I expect from Nokia.

Doesn’t work for free software. Still can’t click on the Download button

  21. 21 Gert

Redownload still doesn’t work -specifically for the youtube app- with most recent client and firmware on a Nokia 5800!!

Why would there be any point in restricting access to something like the youtube app? Good thing I haven’t bought anything, and rest assured I won’t spend a cent until this is fixed.

  22. 22 Qman

So this doesn’t work for apps that were downloaded when they were offered for free? I downloaded Midomi when it was free but lost it during a reset. I can’t seem to redownload it without having to pay for it even though it is listed in my download history in my Ovi account. Or is redownloading of “free” apps not supported?

  23. 23 apetit

i updated my app downloader 2 the ovi store and now when i click on it it tells me that it doesnt work wit my phone. i hav a n95 8gb…plz, can some1 help??

Very informative post. I’ve found your site via Bing and I’m really happy about the information you provide in your posts. Btw your blogs layout is really broken on the Kmelon browser. Would be great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the great work!
