For all those music lovers out there, I’ve got some good news. It’s called Nokia Ovi Player. While not entirely new, I think there are some things you’re going like about this software.
Ovi Player is the new name for the earlier Nokia Music application. Ovi Player is not a ground-up rebuild of Nokia Music, but it does contain some new features that will make it even easier to use.
Ovi Player contains some new views to help you navigate and enjoy your music collection. The ‘recently added’ view is used by many people as a way of keeping track of their new music. This enhanced view shows your recently added music grouped by albums together with cover art. In addition, the introduction of a ‘filter column’ on the detailed view will also help you browse your music collection more easily.
We’ve also redesigned the player controls to be more compact and to offer a more responsive volume control and track position selector.

Ovi Player is compatible with all existing Nokia Music Stores. When viewing Nokia Music Store using Ovi Player, the ‘music queue’ is now retractable to allow the best possible browsing experience. The queue is retracted by default but can be exposed by hovering over a simple arrow control.
When getting new music, the download progress is now displayed in a consolidated ‘progress panel’ at the bottom of the application. This panel also lets you monitor your device music transfer status.
As well as containing numerous defect fixes and some performance enhancements, this is the first version of our application to fully support Windows 7.
We’re confident that this is by far the best version of our application yet. We hope you and the millions of other active users continue to enjoy it as we work on the next round of improvements. So give it a try and let us know what you think below. http://music.nokia.com/download

Lovin the update ! Way to go guys !
nice – keep up the improvements and updates
I am a new owner of a 5530 XP and I created an ovi account I wanted to tell that Ovi services are unusable and very buggy !!! it’s really a shame !! I can give an whole lot of examples of bugs the most annoying one is the need to sign in each time you go from one service to another say from the store to maps for example: looks like the site does not uses http sessions I mean have you ever used gmail for instance ??!! . that almost makes regret my purshase, Nokia needs to fix that very soon otherwise you will be swapped out of business : it’s no more only about hardware guys its about software (that includes online services). Good luck. by the way , no way to get my phone’s mail application configured with ovi mail on my 5530.
any plans for a Mac version?. As an Apple user I would like to be able to use OVI Player instead of iTunes.
Thanks
@Agent Smith take you point about cross-service sign in – this will be enabled in the new year. @Dan Carter we will have support for Mac coming soon in the new year as well – life for Mac/Nokia users is going to get a lot easier in 2010
looks great! I’ll test it right away; I love updates!
Seems to be working better than the last version. The new filter view is quite Mac-like. Good stuff.
WONDERFUL!!! Congratulations guys, the new software looks – and works – great! I loved it!
I’m not able to use my “Comes with music” any more!! I hope that Problem is fixed untill tomorrow!
Its a shame, that Ovi isn’t able to release a working tool. I have also problems with Ovi Maps and the Updating of my Nokia 5800 XM.
But the look has become better, thats right!
Where can I download the Ovi Player?
I have to admit, its really annoying signing into a lot of ovi services individually. I also admit that software, like OVI SUITE is a joke to release it that early without any proper testing. It improved a bit but its nothing even close to final, lacking too many features and WAYYY TO SLOW.
Even Ovi Mail, is it so hard for you guys to use OVI’s Contacts Addressbook for OVI MAIL?
A lot of people are complaining, on many many sites, im not sure if Nokia just doesnt care or is so blind to see that…
Still no podcasts, no video. Oh well, maybe they are coming in the new year too…
I appear to have problem installing/updating the software from my existing Nokia Music. The download for Ovi Player failed instantly (progress bar showing ‘Failed’). I have been trying it with the web client, and uninstalling Nokia Music then reinstalling from client, and yet it won’t work. Any ideas what went wrong/where I can get troubleshoot help?
I really like the “look” you have done with this one people, congratulations where they are due!
There is one niggle I have and this goes for every music player I’ve ever tried; that is, there is no “find duplicate” menu. When you have a lot of music, it is a real pain having to manually delete duplicate music files, or even organising them. If such a function exists in Ovi Player than I can’t seem to find it. Just a suggestion.
I have one other request. Is it possible to add the player to the list on “Foxy Tunes”? I really like the fact that I can control other music players whist surfing the net without having to go to the app every time.
Thanks, and again, a great job on the new look.
I can’t seem to open the Nokia Ovi Player on my computer which is running on 32 bit vista. Every time i open it, it just tells me that “Nokia Ovi Player has stopped working and then it just closes. Anyone has any suggestions to solving it or similar experiences?
Aarrgghh! Nokia Music 1.2 was working fine. Yesterday it decided to force me to “upgrade” to Nokia Ovi Player. Now it does not connect to the Music Store. Something is broken in one of the prerequisites, so now I have to uninstall all the .NET stuff and reinstall Nokia Ovi Player.
If it was not for the fact that I’m paying for Nokia Comes With Music on a contract, I would just give up on this.
Most packages allow you to turn OFF automatic software upgrades. Not Nokia software. This stuff sucks. At least Apple, (while still using DRM – when are you guys going to get the message?) supplies software that works properly out of the box, so to speak.
I have used Nokia PC suite for a few years and now when I went to use it, it downloaded an update that included OVI player. During the download I got several warnings from Norton about a serious threat. It recommended that I block the threat which I did. The OVI download seemed to complete but failed to work.
I then went to remove the OVI and Nokia PC suite from my computer it left one additional program called NOkia multimedia common components. I am unable to remove that pgm. When I do, it gives a message that its needed for OVI which has been removed.
What is this CARP!
Anyone else have this problem?
Same here! My Nokia Music was fine and now this “UP”date won`t even start, way to bounce back from that 3Q ownage by apple
I upgraded and now it wont work it just closes and does nothing thanks alot nokia!!!
im running 64bit vista
if you guys decide to force me to upgrade from nokia music to nokia ovi player, the least that you guys can do for me is to make sure it works. since it cant be done, why must I be forced to make the upgrade?
Yeah, I’m in the same situation as most of these guys. It forced me to update, now I cannot even open it, like WTH? Now I can’t even play my music on my laptop. Good work there guys! (Y)
Was working, update and now all I get is “We are very sorry but the store can not be accessed at this time”… or yesterday for that matter. Also, when are nokia going to catch up with the rest and include proxy settings in the app?
Still waiting for OSX and Linux versions. Nokia owns Trolltech/QT – It should be relatively easy to code cross-platform programs, why Nokia supports (almost) only Windows? I dont accept “Mac and Linux versions are coming soon” as answer to this question.
I had problems getting Ovi Player installed too – but finally got it to work. Try this:
1. Uninstall the app from the Windows Control Panel
2. Turn on the ‘Show hidden files and folders’ option in Windows Explorer (I’m using Vista – click on Organize in any file window, choose Folder and Search Options and look under the View tab)
3. Go to C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Local\Nokia and delete the Nokia Data Store and Nokia Ovi Player folders. There will be similar folder in XP, but I don’t know where…
4. Reinstall Nokia Ovi Player (get the .exe from music.nokia.com/download)
This will cause Ovi Player to rebuild your music database (none of the actual music files are changed), which could take a while depending on your music collection. Fixed it for me.
What does that tell you NOKIA? OVI SUITE AND OVI PLAYER FULL OF BUGS!!!! TOO many unsatisfied users!!! Great achievement!
Ovi installed fine, only problem is trying to sign in on Ovi Music tab….!! there are two entry fields with no indication – i assume the firts is username and other password. i type both in, processign icon bottom left goes but cant seem to log in!! any help would be much appreciated!
We now also get the same error as JP.
Is there a cmd switch one can add to force it into “first run” mode so it asks again for region and other info?
+1 for mac, once again Nokia ignores loyal fans and those on the mac platform.
JP, (and others) try this (on xp).
Close Nokia Ovi player and the three services that stay running.
Delete all folders under: C:\Documents and Settings\”user name”\Local Settings\Application Data\Nokia.
restart application. It should ask for intial info and re-import your songs.
Note Nokia, another bug to fix: Even if you choose to change the “default player” & “folder location” settings when you open the app you will see that they have reverted to back to the defaults.
I have upgraded nokia Music to Ovi player on a 64 bits and a 32 bits PC running VISTA.
After the installation it works very bad sometimes it just stops working.
If you try to login the music store the programs does not react and shuts down.
Unfortunately you cannot go back to Nokia Music that worked fine.
The next step I did is installing the program in the laptop of my wife running XP.
Microsoft C of something like that could not be installed due to network failure, but the Ovi player worked fine , I could log in to the music store , check my account.
The bad thing is that you cannot return to the program that was working.
The installation of Ovi Player may fail due to some old files and registry left during the uninstall of Nokia Music.
I would recommend to install Ovi Player from this link, and do close all the Nokia applications before installing.
http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/nseries/phones/software/SetupOviPlayer.exe
If the installation fails, then try uninstalling as per following instructions.
First do a simple uninstall:
1. Select Run from the Start Menu. In the Run window type “cmd” and click ‘Ok’
2. In the command window type the following:
a. cd C:\Program Files\Nokia\Ovi Player and hit enter
b.NokiaOviPlayer.exe /command:uninstall all and hit enter
3. In the “Add/Remove Programs” window (XP) or “Programs and Features” window (Vista) Select Nokia Ovi Player and click Remove/Uninstall.
4. Wait for uninstall to complete, reboot if required
If this does not resolve the problem, follow these additional steps to completely remove Ovi Player from the PC.
1. Go back to Add or Remove programs.
2. Select Nokia Multimedia Common Components and click Remove/uninstall. If a message is displayed saying that the component is needed by Nokia Music then do the following:
a. Click ‘Run’ on the start menu and type “regedit”
b. In the window displayed navigate to either “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Software\Nokia\MPlatform\” or, “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Nokia\MPlatform”
c. Delete the key “MPlatform” from the registry
d. Repeat step 2.
3. Delete the following folders if they are present, but first make hidden files and folders visible:
a. Open a windows explorer window (for example My Documents or Computer).
b. Go to Tools > Folder options…
c. On View tab go to Advanced settings
d. Ensure Show hidden files and folders is selected.
4. On Windows XP:
a. C:\Program Files\Nokia\Ovi Player
b. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\MPlatform
c. C:\Documents and Settings\<>\Local Settings\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Data Store
d. C:\Documents and Settings\<>\Local Settings\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Music
5. On Windows Vista:
a. C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia Music
b. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\MPlatform
c. C:\Users\<>\AppData\Local\Nokia\Nokia Data Store
d. C:\Users\<>\AppData\Local\Nokia\Nokia Ovi Player
6. Go back to Add or Remove programs.
7. Select PC Connectivity Solution and click Remove/uninstall.
8. Select Nokia Connectivity Cable drive and click Remove/uninstall.
9. Reboot PC
If the cause of the issue seem to be related to compatibility problem with other Nokia applications, remove Nokia Ovi Suite or Nokia PCSuite including Nokia Photos and delete all Nokia folders.
If this all fails, then please contact Nokia care for further investigation.
Stop wasting Nokia’s (and ours!) money. Thank you.
Forced to update to OVI Player from Nokia Music, now I don’t get album artwork when I rip a CD.
Great!!! Got the app working, was able to purchase music but cant play it…. Sits on a pretty pink window saying Licensing….. Useless rubbish app
Why Nokia Ovi Player is still needed? Get this into slick new Ovi Suite! I don’t want many different PC apps from Nokia, Ovi Suite is enough for me.
NOKIA!!!!
ARGHHHHH
ITs a FUCKING Nightmare… first you force all people to use OVI SUITE AND OVI PLAYER and then its BLOODY BUGGY!!!!
If I was the IT Manager I would fire em all and redo it from scratch.
This is bloody annoying!!!
And you will loose customers.
Tried to download and install several times now…did not really worked out for me.
The older version did not recognize all my music files and did not import all the Art work either.
I saw several hints on how to uninstall old files and install the new ones…and a lot of disappointment in the rest of the blog…
Not sure if this happens if you download ITunes…guess not.
Just now I tried to reinstall Ovi Player using the file SetuoOviPlayer.exe and it installed the old Nokia Music instead. And it says there are no updates available! Good thing this is “by far the best version of our application yet”
Are there any ‘official’ updates on the latest with the Ovi Player?
All I can offer is that yesterday like many people I experienced the unfortunate Ovi Player Freeze…. and long wait. (After it spent sometime being completely unresponsive it then closed all by itself.)
So today, being the adventerous IT tinkerer who likes a challenge, I decided to see if I could get it going.
(Running Windows 7 Home Premium)
- Started with an Uninstall and then headed to the music website to grab the latest installer.
- Downloaded a file called.. “SetupOviPlayer.exe” and ran the installer.
- It grabbed off the net the ‘latest’ music software.
- Noticed that Nokia Music V 1.3 was installed.
- Even tried running the “Check for Updates” option within V1.3. “Your copy of Nokia Music is up to date.”
Are we to wait for a ‘take 2′ with regard to the Ovi Player?
After the exciting news of the original post, obviously something has gone wrong, and unfortunately with more than just a few people. It would be nice to hear that ‘officially’.
It’s a shame the update couldn’t be optional (as others suggest) and perhaps it could live over at Nokia Betalabs and get some public testing time and feedback.
I for one am happy to test future music software releases before they are pushed out to all.
Any news?
I had the same experience as Flip. When I got home tonight, I had a go at reinstalling Nokia Ovi Player using SetupOviPlayer.exe. This downloaded and installed Nokia Music 1.3 which works 100% on my Windows 7 (64-bit) PC. Now it doesn’t find Ovi Player when it tries to upgrade.
This is a big improvement. Don’t force me to “upgrade” to a version of software that does not work. While Nokia Music doesn’t have a lot of features, at least it does allow me to download music from the Nokia Store.
Meanwhile, I had installed Nokia Ovi Player on my work laptop. It did not connect to the Nokia store at work and I thought that perhaps the firewall or proxy was blocking it. Not so. Back at home I connected to my ADSL router using WiFi and I still get “We are very sorry but we cannot access the Music Store at this time. Please check your Internet connection or try again later. Well, there’s no problem with my Internet connection and I have full control of the setup at home so I know it’s fine.
Conclusion: Nokia Ovi Player is seriously buggy. It’s time for Nokia to slam the Ovi shut, fire whoever is responsible for the product and only release new software once it’s had some serious testing by Beta Testers. Clearly the Nokia testers are only covering a small subset of all the possible installation scenarios and hence the problems that many of us have experienced.
Poor show, Nokia, and PLEASE don’t force another upgrade like yesterday. At least give me the choice to roll back if your next attempt is as bad as Ovi Player 2.0 was for me. For now, I’m perfectly happy to use Nokia Music 1.3.
Nokia music prompted me to download OVI player. I did. It didn’t launch and had some sort of fatal error. I uninstalled it and went to the OVI player downlad which downloaded SetupOviPlayer. Which I ran. Which Installed Nokia Music (not Ovi Player). I run Nokia Music and search for updates and it tells me I have latest software. I then Google OVI PLAYER and this blog comes up top of list, not the site that I need for the download.
What is going on? Does OVI player exist or have you withdrawn it already because it doesn’t work? Funny, I never have this problem with Apple.
Woo. Quite a few moaners on here – typical Internet s**t. Just thought I would drop a line to say I really love the new version. Much better UI, MUCH faster start up time. Kep it up guys.
Ovi Suite 2 is designated to replace all the desktop apps by Nokia.
But a few weeks after the Ovi Suite 2.0 launch, you guys rename + revamp your PC music app! Way to go people, nobody can beat you guys at being confused.
Tried to update and claims I have the latest version – what I have is Nokia Music, version 1.3.20722.01. What’s going on? Now available in the US yet or something?
every couple of hours I checked if there is an update from nokia that could repair Ovi player.
This morning I read that the old nokia music will be installed if you remove ovi player and install ovi player.
in the configuration screen i saw that the tab repair ( in dutch herstellen) appeared.
First applied on my 64 bits vista PC and it looks like that it works, still some unregularities but i could get access to my account and system does not shut down.
the same result on my notebook with 32 bits vista.
Fixed the start-up problem at last. Works good for me. Nice update.
I encountered start-up problem after the Ovi Player upgrade as well. It was fine while running on Nokia Music. Now that I have uninstalled the oiv player, I was unable reinstalled it as the link to download Ovi Player only installs Nokia Music.
My guess: Ovi Player is buggy and is shelved for repair and instead Nokia Music is offered for the time being.
It is sad that Nokia has not check things properly before releasing for download. Shame on you!
Nokia music worked fine for me until it was updated to Ovi player now i cant sign in , cannot sync my phone so can you return to what works. This is seriously annoying considering removing all ovi and nokia from my pc. Right now more trouble than it`s worth.By the way do you address the issues from customers or just leave them hanging
Hi! I can’t update my software!
It’s saying that its already updated.
Whatr can i do?
i cant listen to music that was on my phone,it use to play before now,but now it will say general system error…what can i do?
In my case, Ovi Player opened in the first time I tried to use it. After it came the crash as everyone is saying. AND worst… I could not login to the music store anymore. I’m still in my free period and guess what? The store is not recognizing it… now I have to pay for it. Huh?
Talking about it… why there is no offline installer. I know that many people use ADSL, but there are a lot who still use dial up.
Curiously, I can use my NK5800 to access the store, which is no where near the comfort of using my notebook. Nokia said I have to call some number to solve the problem. Huh again??? Hello???? Support by e-mail??
Seriously… Nokia, you should fire all your IT team and get a new one… and make sure they are better!!!!!!!!!!
+1
Buggy does not describe this software. Nokia music was bad but this is worse. Grinds my computer to a halt. Takes a lifetime to load. Now refuses to work at all, after CCleaner removed some registry errors Nokia Ovi created. I want to ditch CWM asap. Piece of rubbish software! Beta testing is clearly not throughly done.
Like everyone else HATE being forced to download an update. Cant even uninstall Nokia Music. Its sitting on my laptop. Clogging it up yet I am unable to uninstall it.
Very well and good giving a long list of intructions. However I have a life. I dont want to spend all day on it.
Not working with Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit…
I don’t understand why the setup installs Nokia Music instead of Nokia Ovi Player…any help please???…I’m using Windows 7
