Store Beta Release Available for Nokia N900
Published by Eric on January 12th, 2010 in Ovi by Nokia and Store
I’m pleased to announce that we’re opening the doors of the Store as a Beta release to Nokia N900 users and offering a collection of hand-picked content. Nokia N900 users can find the Store on the main menu of their device. Once inside the store, you’ll immediately see the apps developed expressly for Maemo 5 and the Nokia N900 ranging from Foreca Weather and Documents to Go to Pixelpipe, Evernote and Bounce Evolution.
I’ve been using the Documents to Go file viewing app when I need to be productive while on the move. The Documents To Go Viewer Edition lets me view native Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and email attachments right on my N900. I especially like the multi-level zoom feature that let’s me zero in on the part of a document that I need. Download a 30 day free trial from the Store. If you like what you see, the app is currently available at the special introductory price of $9.99 (regularly $19.99).
For those of you who are new to the N900, it’s a touch-based device that also has a full QWERTY keyboard. It runs Nokia’s Linux-based operating system, Maemo 5, and features 32 GB of storage, 3G, a 3.5-inch screen, a 5 MP camera, and Carl Zeiss optics. In addition to the hardware specs, the N900 features a slick user interface, a fully customizable desktop that changes with a simple swipe of your finger, a complete browsing experience including support for Adobe Flash 9.4, and multi-tasking, making it easy to browse, consume, and enjoy content all at the same time. Seeing is believing. Take a look at the video:
Welcome to the first wave of N900 innovation. Soon, you’ll see more new and exciting apps and games in the Store that includes some of your favorite Symbian-based content as well as new items designed exclusively for the powerful new Maemo 5 operating system.
For developers who are looking to build apps for Maemo 5 and the Nokia N900, please visit the Forum Nokia Maemo area to learn more about development tools, APIs, and tips and tricks for developing for this exciting platform. When development is done and you’re ready to publish your item to the Store, please visit here http://publish.ovi.com .
We’re really excited about the new opportunities that the Nokia N900 and the Store offer to customers, publishers, and developers. This is just the beginning.

Hi.
i have the same problem that many of you have. i can download all i want from Ovi if i use the 3G or GPRS connection, but it stops on preparing innstalls if i use WiFi. could this be a port problem of some kind? anyone know what ports Ovi and the N900 needs open ?
June 5, 2010 at 5:10 pm
I have the N900 for 4 months and have been waiting for fring and true time navigation updates..when will fring be available gosh i was so happy with E51 E52 and E71 ..when will more apps be available..esp fring ????

April 17, 2010 at 5:10 pm
Not impressed. The N900 is not a new phone, why is this all taking so long? I just switched from an iphone 3gs due to apples mafia like behavior, limiting its users in anyway they please, which I’m happy to report doesnt happen on the n900.
Whats going on with the pc suite and the ovi suite? Why cant I upload my contacts to ovi? and if one day this is possible, will those ovi contacts be automatically synced over the air when i modify them on the device? (a la MobileMe). Whats all this hype youve managed to create about the approx., 7 applications you have on the “ovi store beta”? How is anyone impressed by this and how were these questions not asked in the development phase of the device? For now people at nokia, im forced to return to the iphone, which is a shame because its solely due to your poor organisation.

I have the same problem with Raghuram and Matty on my N900, cant log in to Ovi Store.
March 30, 2010 at 12:51 pm
Getting the same problem as ragsnram.
We’re sorry. Ovi Store is currently not available for your device. Please check back as new Nokia devices are being added frequently.”
Tried signing in, but ended up on the same page.
I’ve checked to see if I had the latest version and I have. I was able to get into the store yesterday before I installed the latest update for MAEMO.
A friend of mine who also has the N900 is able to download and install apps fine.
March 30, 2010 at 2:51 am
When I click on the Ovi Store icon, it goes to a page which says “We’re sorry. Ovi Store is currently not available for your device. Please check back as new Nokia devices are being added frequently.”
Tried signing in, but ended up on the same page.
Btw, my firmware version is 3.2010.02-8 (PR 1.1.1).
And the link it tries to go is apparently: link.ovi.mobi/n900ovistore

I also have a problem with downloading from the OVI store. When you click on “download” for any application it starts the download manager and says “preparing for install”. After a couple of seconds it says “application not found”. Is this a problem with my device settings or with the OVI website it is connecting to? As a couple of other people have mentioned, all the applications listed show 0.0 Mb as if there is no data there to download. I am running the latest software/firmware update.
I would be interested in anyone who has successfully downloaded aplications such as bounce etc if they could tell me whether the applications show their size or if it always shows 0.0 Mb. Also if you could note the exact address your device is pointing to for the OVI store.
Any Ideas??

Hey so I understand for the Nokia N97 you can go to the Ovi Maps website and download maps, load them on to your phone and navigate regardless of whether you are connected to 3g or wifi network. How do you achieve the same goal with N900? and What version of the Ovi Maps does the N900 use because I have downloaded 3.0 but it doesn’t seem to detect the N900. When I am on Pc Suite mode it tells me to switch to Mass Storage and when I do it tells me to switch to PC Suite mode!
i need cd for n900
March 10, 2010 at 11:20 pm
I too think this n900 is a great phone however, I have not been able to download a single application in 3 months of owning it.
In the ovi store the listed apps are all 0.0 mb.
My phone is up to date with maemo and this makes no difference at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Left the iPhone for n900 and am LOVING the phone. Soo much faster and capability of multitasking is priceless. BUT WHERE ARE THE APPLICATIONS!! I need my BBC, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Shazam, Dictionary.com App, Rock Band, Need For Speed, Themes, Fitness and Workout apps, Calorie counter apps and the list goes on
I know there are over 100,000 apps for the iPhone but some of them i would say around 100 are the essential ones Nokia should have targeted on getting released or atleast fully developed BEFORE or with this amazing machine’s release. Applications such as Stocks, Weather, News, Workout and at least 2 or 3 good games are what make you attached to a smart phone so much more than regular.
COME ON NOKIA!

I tried to download some small free apps from ovi such as the blogger app, but they don’t show up on my n900. where are they? And yes i did opdate to Maemo5.
very strange, is there an ‘all programs’ button somewhere as in windows?
January 19, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I have had the N900 for a couple of weeks now, and I am mightliy impressed with the polish of the smartphone / mobile devices these days. I dipped out of smartphones for about three years.
The only real problems I have experienced are with synchronisation OTA, and locally tethered
I have given up on synchronsising with google, it’s just too flakey on the calendar and contacts.
No sync with hotmail in these areas as well.
Incidentally reading both sets of mail accounts I have no problems with, and responding to mails.
I use mupltiple computers so tying my device sync onto just one is not practical, with a device such as the N900 it needs to be over the air sync, with an online service.
The Nokia maps needs easier bookmarking and more intuitive functionality, I hope that comes eventually but the GPS and maps are good for walking routes. I’ll be trying out geocaching soon with the family. installing Maploader and the UK Europe maps was very smooth, no hiccups and does seem to speed up the maps app when in use. Good work in this area for the UK and Europe at least (I don’t need other maps at the moment.
I tested out the ovi share upload facility and it did what it said, but I prefer the direct upload to facebook which works in the same fashion. Is there a max size for the share facility either on individual files like movies, or a general maximum cpacity limit on this service?
I think the owners of the N900 would really like to know the answers to the following questions.
When will the N900 be selectable as a device on the Ovi site to allow the needed functionality of sync with PIM functions.
Will file Sync with ovi ever be setup to function direct from the N900 device. (I.E nothing to do with the PC, but a location where you can drop / sync files with online from your N900.
When will calendar sync be permitted with the N900 and the Ovi calendar. (I think that the basic calendar looks quite polished online.)
When will contact sync be available with the N900 and ovi contacts please.
I have found the store front to be very usable both from the PC and mainly from the N900 itself. its a good balance on design, keep it up.
I hope that this is a good forum for airing these comments as it’s more about recognising that what is needed is a structured format of features that are in the process of being developed and making sure that they are clearly listed somewhere that the community can see. (of course new features might be kept as a surprise!).
It can then give some structure to specific feature sets from the community that can be expanded upon.

Hi!
I´d like to see a stepcounter app in n900 (like the one for symbian s60) and would be moore than happy if n900 could sync calander to ovi.com.
What about ovi maps to n900 with voiceguide, it´s not working at all now!?
I´m a macuser and will stay so, get the n900 to be macfriendly and lots of people will consider n900 before Iphone, just a little tip:-)

Can you guys create a simple bug free Ovi website that does not log me out every 2 minutes?

i have n900.i switched from e61.the battery in n900 really drains out fast which i really hate comparing to the awsome e61 that i never had a problem with its batter no matter how aggressive i use it.even the battery for e61 is much bigger than n900

I Live in Ivory coast and I cannot access the Store from my mobile and even from my Computer, i have this error message:

Is there a way to have Ovi Applications through the N900 Application Manager??
I Hope This will be fixed soon…

I too can’t seem to download the foreca weather and facebook app. basically the entire ovi store i cannot download. And all the applications on ovi beta shows 0.0 size. that means there arent any files on the server. but all the files that are there in the maemo 5 application manager download menu are available. But still my OM weather application doesnt download any updates. its stuck on the weather update it gave to me on the 11th january 2010. Can anyone please find out whats going on.

Hi Ovi guys,
i´d love to see some text description with each app or theme, already in the browsing state. A pic and the name and the rating isn´t enough to know whether this is the app I want to check out more closely. I think also a more detailed rating, (from 1-5 stars e.g) will be needed when you will get more apps in the future. Good Luck,
Kristian

All, for those who have the Nokia N900 and want to update to the latest software, you can also use the on-device App Manager to do an over-the-air update. Here’s the steps:
Step 1: Turn the N900 device on
Step 2: Locate App Manager by tapping the blue grid icon on the upper left hand corner of the N900 main menu
Step 3: Click the More icon on the lower left hand corner of the device interface
Step 4: Click the App Manager (you’ll be presented with three options (1) Uninstall (2) Download (3) Update.
Step 5: Choose the Update option
Step 6: Choose the Maemo 5 update
Download the file (21.8 MB) over WiFi and update the device
The device will restart. After installing the new Maemo software on device, go to the Ovi Store shortcut to enter and browse the Store. Hope this helps. – Eric

Eric, that would be fine if the N900 could work with PC Suite to back it up. It doesn’t.
If the phone were a baby, I’d call it a preemie. Jim

Hello the Ovi Store App looks great!! However, I have tried installing the Calculator and the Black&White theme but the device is stuck on “Preparing for install, please wait.” Any word on this?

I have the excelent 900 since november but the coordination with PC is very unstable. PC suite tells me everi time that is connected in a 0non compatible mode’. Often WinXp switchs off the USB port non recognized.
With Win7 seems to go slightly better but is only the second PC.
I was expecting a real OVIsuite for 900 or a more suitale PC suite. When it comes?

Hi James, You do need to register or or log in to Ovi Store before you download. See if that works. Also, be sure you’re running the latest version of the Maemo software on your N900. To do that, connect your device to your desktop via the USB cord, install/ start the Nokia PC Suite application that came with your device. Click the icon that says Update Phone Software (Green arrow Icon) and download the latest version of Maemo from there. Be sure you backup your device before you run the update. Best – Eric
